14 and 15 March 2007

Foreword

Federal Minister Horst Seehofer

The ongoing process of economic globalisation means that the Internet and digital technologies exert considerable influence on very many areas of the everyday life of citizens of the European Union. These new technologies are highly innovative and are becoming increasingly popular with industry and consumers. Improved ways to communicate and exchange information, to buy goods or transact banking and insurance business have made life much easier. However, the greater range of possibilities available also results in a corresponding increase in demands regarding safe use, transparency and information. Consumer policy must support this process so that the potential of the new technologies can be utilised successfully for the benefit of market partners and society.

The "Challenges and Opportunities in a Digital World. The Role of Consumer Policy" conference offers the opportunity to examine this topic in the course of the German EU Council Presidency. Along with high-level decision-makers in politics, business and associations, we want to discuss the necessary framework conditions to accompany technological change. The conference should highlight the fact that, in times of rapid technological developments, a high level of consumer protection is essential for consumer confidence and economic development in Europe.

I am looking forward to welcoming you to Berlin on 14 and 15 March 2007, the World Consumer Rights Day.

Yours faithfully,

Horst Seehofer

Federal Minister of Food,
Agriculture and Consumer Protection
